Black Forest Cake

I absolutely love cherries, and if there’s anything with cherries on the menu, you can bet I’m ordering it.

That’s why this Black Forest Cake is one of my all-time favorites.

My chocolate cake recipe is always a hit with friends and family, so I decided to add cherries for an extra special treat.

This cake features a rich, moist chocolate base, a double layer of cherry filling, and a light whipped cream topping.

It’s perfect for anyone who loves the combination of cherry and chocolate!

Ingredients

Chocolate cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp espresso powder
  • 1 cup freshly brewed coffee
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Black forest filling:

  • 1 cup fresh cherries, pitted
  • 21 oz cherry pie filling
  • 16 oz whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat to 350°F. Spray two 8-inch round cake pans with nonstick spray. Set aside.

Step 2: Beat eggs and sugar on high for 3 minutes until frothy.
Add vanilla, oil, sour cream, and espresso powder. Mix to combine.

Step 3: Add flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix until just combined.
Add coffee and mix briefly.

Step 4: Divide batter between the pans. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool completely.

Step 5: Mix fresh cherries with cherry pie filling.

Step 6: Slice each cake in half to create four layers.

Step 7: Place one layer on a plate, spread whipped cream, and add 1/3 of the cherry filling.
Repeat with remaining layers.

Step 8: Spread whipped cream on top and garnish with chocolate shavings. Serve and enjoy!
