Spread soft butter over the top of each sandwich. Place the sandwich butter side down in a hot skillet over medium-low heat.  Spread butter over the side facing up.  Cover the skillet loosely with aluminum foil. Cook until the bottom is golden brown then flip.

Cover and cook until the other side is golden brown.  The sandwich should be heated through and the cheese should be melted.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What makes a Reuben Sandwich classic?

A quintessential Reuben boasts layers of corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing, all nestled between slices of rye bread.

Can I substitute corned beef with another protein?

While corned beef is traditional, feel free to experiment with pastrami or turkey for a tasty twist.

What type of bread is best for a Reuben?

Rye bread is the go-to choice, contributing a distinct flavor that complements the savory fillings. However, personal preferences can guide your selection.

Can I make Thousand Island dressing from scratch?

Absolutely! Homemade dressing adds a special touch. Combine mayo, ketchup, relish, and a dash of Worcestershire for that signature flavor.

How do I achieve the perfect melt on the Swiss cheese?

Assemble the sandwich and toast it in a skillet or under a broiler. This ensures a gooey, melted perfection.

Is sauerkraut necessary for a Reuben?

Yes, sauerkraut adds a tangy kick that balances the richness of the meat and cheese. However, you can adjust the quantity based on personal preference.

Can I make Reuben Sandwiches ahead of time?

While assembling in advance may lead to soggy bread, you can prep components like the dressing and layer them just before serving for optimal freshness.
