Cheesy No-Steam Flan

Of the many desserts that have graced tables at family reunions and Christmas parties, flan is one of the most popular and most loved.

In fact, it even ranks first on my list of personal favorites.

Flan is a custard dessert known for its milky, sweet taste and spongey, gelatin-like texture. It is made with milk, eggs, and a whole lot of sugar. Flan is popular in places with Spanish, Hispanic, and Latino origins, which makes it no surprise to find its popularity in Filipino cuisine. Almost like panna cotta or the Dutch vla, Leche Flan’s smooth consistency makes for an altogether satisfying bite.

And if you don’t have an oven? That’s not a problem either! This Cheesy No-Steam Flan recipe doesn’t require any baking time in the oven. That being said, it will still come out just as deliciously.

Ingredients:

  • Flan mold (M) 14×9.5×3.2cm or plastic container clamshell
  • Sugar (1 tsp each mold)
Flan mixture:
  • 3 whole large eggs
  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Jelly mixture:
  • 25g clear jelly powder
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 3 cups of water
  • quick melt cheese
Procedure:
Step 1: Add 1 tsp sugar in each mold and caramelized
Step 2: In a bowl combine all the flan mixture ingredients.
Step 3: In a pan add clear jelly powder, cornstarch, and water then mix well until fully combined.
Cook over low medium heat until it boils then add the flan mixture. Continue to stir until fully combined.
Step 4: Add the grated quick-melt cheese to the mixture then cook again on low heat until the cheese is melted.
Once it’s done pour the mixture on the mold (you can use S, M, or L)

Step 5: Refrigerate overnight before you serve. For the toppings, you can add grated cheese on top. (optional)

Tips:

Use a Blender: To ensure a smooth and well-mixed flan mixture, use a blender to combine the eggs, condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract. This will help achieve a silky texture.

Strain the Mixture: After blending, strain the flan mixture to remove any lumps or air bubbles. This step contributes to a smoother final texture.

Prepare Clear Jelly Carefully: When making the jelly mixture, follow the instructions on the clear jelly powder package precisely. Be sure to dissolve it completely in water and cool it before adding it to the flan.

Chill Thoroughly: After assembling the flan, make sure to chill it for several hours or overnight for the best texture and flavor.

FAQs:

1. What Is The Purpose Of The Jelly Layer?

The jelly layer adds a refreshing and slightly sweet contrast to the creamy flan. It also helps set the dessert without baking.

2. Can I Use Gelatin Instead Of Clear Jelly Powder?

Yes, you can substitute gelatin for clear jelly powder. Follow the package instructions to prepare the gelatin layer.

3. How Do I Prevent Air Bubbles In The Flan Mixture?

Straining the mixture after blending helps remove air bubbles. You can also gently tap the container to release trapped air.

4. Why Is It Called “No-Steam”?

It’s called “No-Steam” because traditional flan recipes involve steaming the custard. In this recipe, there’s no need for steaming; it’s chilled instead.

5. Can I Make This Flan In Advance?

Yes, you can make No-Bake Flan in advance. It’s best to prepare it a day before serving to allow ample time for chilling.

6. What Type Of Cheese Should I Use As Mentioned In The Ingredients?

The recipe mentions “quick melt cheese,” but it’s not a specific ingredient in the instructions. If you want to include cheese, choose a quick-melt variety like cheddar or mozzarella, and melt it on top before serving for a unique twist.
