Tennessee Onions Better Than Onion Rings
Tennessee Onions are a decadent Southern side dish made with layers of sweet onions, buttery creaminess, and three cheeses baked until golden and bubbly. Perfect alongside BBQ, steak, or grilled chicken.
- 3 large sweet onions Vidalia or Texas Sweet work best
- ½ cup 1 stick unsalted butter, sliced into thin pats
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp dried thyme optional
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped (for garnish)
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Peel and slice onions into ¼-inch rounds, separating the rings.
Step 2: Arrange rings in a 9×13-inch dish; dot with butter.
Step 3: Mix mayo, garlic powder, paprika, pepper, salt, and thyme (optional). Spread over onions.
Step 4: Top with cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
Step 5: Bake uncovered 40–45 minutes until bubbly and golden; broil 1–2 minutes if desired.
Step 6: Rest 5 minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve warm.
