Old-Fashioned Frikkadels
Old-fashioned frikkadels are South African-style meatballs, pan-fried to perfection. Juicy, flavorful, and easy to make, they pair wonderfully with mashed potatoes, rice, or a side of chutney.
- 500 g ground beef
- 1 slice of bread
- 1 onion
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- Salt and pepper
- Olive or vegetable oil
Prepare the bread mixture: Soak the bread in milk for 5 minutes, then squeeze out excess liquid and crumble it.
Mix the ingredients: In a bowl, combine ground meat, crumbled bread, onion, egg, parsley, garlic, coriander, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
Shape the frikkadels: Roll the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs, then slightly flatten them for even cooking.
Heat the oil: Warm 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan over medium heat until hot but not smoking.
Fry the frikkadels: Cook for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and fully cooked. Work in batches if needed.
Drain and serve: Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil. Serve warm with your favorite sides.
