How To Microwave Sweet Potato
This fluffy microwave sweet potato is a quick, nourishing dish that cooks in minutes and can be customized with sweet or savory toppings. It’s soft, naturally sweet, and perfect for busy days when you still want something warm and satisfying.
- 1 medium to large sweet potato about 8 ounces
- Kosher salt to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Small pat of unsalted butter or plant-based butter
- Optional toppings: brown sugar cinnamon, maple syrup, sour cream, chopped herbs, or savory garnishes
Scrub the sweet potato under running water to remove dirt, then pat it dry with a clean towel so it cooks evenly.
Pierce it 3–4 times with a fork on all sides to let steam escape and prevent bursting.
Place it on a microwave-safe plate and cook on high for 4 minutes. Turn it over, then continue microwaving for another 1–3 minutes, checking every 30 seconds until soft.
Test doneness by inserting a fork or knife into the center—it should slide in easily. If not, keep microwaving in 30-second intervals until tender.
Slice it lengthwise and gently fluff the inside with a fork. Season with salt and pepper, then add a small pat of butter to melt into the warm potato.
Finish with your favorite toppings, sweet or savory, and serve right away while hot and soft.
