Homemade sweet onion sauce is a tangy, sweet condiment made with onions, mustard, vinegar, and spices. It’s perfect for salads, sandwiches, or as a dipping sauce, offering a flavorful punch in every bite. Easy to make and packed with taste!
- ⅔ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup cold water
- 6 tbsp white or distilled vinegar
- 1 tbsp cornstarch (or arrowroot powder)
- 1 tbsp minced onion flakes
- 2½ tsp Dijon mustard
- 2½ tsp mustard powder
- ¾ tsp celery salt
- ¾ tsp fresh onion juice
- 1 tsp poppy seeds
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
- ⅓ tsp paprika
- Salt and black pepper
- 1-2 drops sesame oil
Add sugar, cold water, vinegar, cornstarch, minced onion flakes, Dijon mustard, mustard powder, celery salt, and fresh onion juice to a small saucepan. Whisk until smooth and well-blended.
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir constantly as it heats up.
Once the mixture begins to bubble, reduce the heat to medium-low. Stir in the poppy seeds, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, paprika, black pepper, and sesame oil. Mix well.
Let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. If it becomes too thick, add a splash of water and stir.
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the sauce to cool slightly, then transfer to a clean jar or airtight container for storage.
