Family-Style Shepherd’s Pie Tater Tot Casserole
A hearty, family-style casserole combining savory shepherd’s pie filling with a crispy tater tot and cheddar cheese topping. Comfort food made simple.
For the Filling:
- 1 lb 450g ground beef or ground lamb
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1½ cups frozen mixed vegetables peas, carrots, corn
For the Topping:
- 1 28–32 oz / 800–900g bag frozen tater tots
- 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- Optional: fresh parsley or green onions for garnish
Brown the ground beef or lamb in a skillet. Add onion, garlic, and cook until soft.
Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire, herbs, spices, and flour. Gradually add broth and simmer until thick. Mix in frozen veggies and remove from heat.
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread the meat mixture in a greased 9×13-inch dish. Top with frozen tater tots and shredded cheddar.
Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes until golden and bubbly. Let sit 5 minutes before serving.
