Family-Style Shepherd’s Pie Tater Tot Casserole

A hearty, family-style casserole combining savory shepherd’s pie filling with a crispy tater tot and cheddar cheese topping. Comfort food made simple.

Ingredients
  

For the Filling:

  • 1 lb 450g ground beef or ground lamb
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • cups frozen mixed vegetables peas, carrots, corn

For the Topping:

  • 1 28–32 oz / 800–900g bag frozen tater tots
  • cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Optional: fresh parsley or green onions for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Brown the ground beef or lamb in a skillet. Add onion, garlic, and cook until soft.
  • Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire, herbs, spices, and flour. Gradually add broth and simmer until thick. Mix in frozen veggies and remove from heat.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread the meat mixture in a greased 9×13-inch dish. Top with frozen tater tots and shredded cheddar.
  • Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes until golden and bubbly. Let sit 5 minutes before serving.
