Best Flour Tortillas Recipe
These homemade flour tortillas are soft, pliable, and full of flavor. Made with just a handful of ingredients, they come together easily and taste far better than anything you can buy. Perfect for tacos, burritos, and wraps!
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1.5 tsps salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ cup butter or oil
- 1⅓ cups boiling hot water
Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine bread flour, salt, and baking powder. Add butter or oil and mix until the texture is slightly crumbly.
Add hot water & knead: Gradually pour in boiling water while stirring with a wooden spoon. Once the dough comes together, knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead for about 5 minutes. Adjust with a little water if too dry or flour if too sticky.
Divide & rest: Lightly flour your work surface, divide the dough into 12 equal balls, and place them in a bowl. Cover with a warm, damp towel and let them rest for 10-15 minutes.
Roll out the tortillas: Heat a dry pan over medium heat. Roll each dough ball into a thin, 8-inch circle on a floured surface. Don't worry about perfect shapes!
Cook the tortillas: Place one tortilla in the hot pan and cook for 30-40 seconds until bubbles form. Flip and cook for another 20-30 seconds, pressing lightly with a spatula. Stack cooked tortillas in a clean towel to keep warm and soft.
